Blake Ferguson Wonderful voice, great classic country sound. The story of the guitar passing hands makes this album feel very special. Favorite track: Bitter Old World (Song for Blaze).

Starlight 03:30
On the dusty edge of Wanblee, she was thumbing for a ride She cocked her head and said name was Starlight I taught her how to drive a rig and she gave me this guitar She was like a dream to me - Starlight Starlight, Starlight She walked on every dream I ever had She left me in the desert, snake-bit and fixed to die I watched her drive off in the heat - Starlight I traded all I had for an old Buick and a gun I searched every interstate for Starlight Starlight, Starlight She walked on every dream I ever had One day way up in Koochiching, full of whiskey and despair I heard a voice on the frequency - Starlight My head was suddenly filled with all the devils and their doom I gripped the wheel and spat her name - Starlight Starlight, Starlight She walked on every dream I ever had I found her at a motel, I yanked open the door But she had the drop on me - Starlight Shotgun at her shoulder, she winked and said "goodbye" Left me dying in the snow - Starlight. Starlight, Starlight She walked on every dream I ever had

Wake up in the fall Tears turned to snow I'm pretty damned well Used to the cold I walked out on a friend I walked down the road He was singing my name And a song that I wrote Forgive all my sins So I can lay down in the sound Bind all my wounds And lay down in the sound I hold this pen Like a gun in my hand I can't pretend That I'm happy you called I'll never sing As sweet as a crow Draped in her black, Purple, and gold.

about

Here’s a story:
The acoustic guitar played on this EP is a 1978 Limited Edition Martin D-28. It belonged to my grandfather Earl who was like a giant to me when I was a kid and was one of my favorite people in the whole world. He loved Martin guitars with a passion, he could tell you everything about the history of the guitar maker. He special ordered this dreadnought direct from Nazareth as it had certain specifications he found desirable: Indian Rosewood and its deep tones, and broader fretboard than certain guitars he had previously owned. He played this guitar until about the early 90’s when arthritis made it difficult for him and it took to sitting in the closet. One day when we were talking guitars I made an off-hand comment that I wanted to learn how to play 6-string (I was a bass player at the time). I told him that if he was ever willing to part with it, that I would be honored to have it. I didn’t think anything more of it (aside from rescuing it from the closet) but one day I got a call from Earl and he asked me to stop by the house. He was sitting in his living room with the guitar. He played a few bars of Tennessee Flat Top Box, cased it, slid it over to me and told me that I could have it if I really wanted it. I was 19 at the time. Some 20 years later I still have it and I play it nearly every day. Now that grandpa Earl is many years gone I am even more glad to have the guitar - I think about him every time I play it and I often think about how this instrument has impacted me. I guess it sort of set me on a path. I’ve done a lot of different things with music at different times of my life, but after several years of not writing much of anything I’ve decided to get back at it, but this time I wanted to try my hand at something different. I figured maybe I would even write a song or two that Earl would have liked. So I started this new music project and I even lent Earl’s name to it. I hope he would be proud of it. Maybe you could give it a listen. If you like it, share it with someone else. It’s not Hank...but I think it’s about the best I can do.
