I'm sharp as a steak knife on the table for supper
Snuggled up next to the wine
Went out on the town with a pocket full of copper
And a fifth in my chore coat that night
Drove out to the sticks and got flagged by a copper
Hauled me off in to the pen
I could have been sipping coffee in the kitchen
If I'd had listened to the words that you said.
Feel free not to bother with the words of your father
But you better pay attention to mine
Quit runnin' all night with the dark and the devil
And a head full of whiskey and wine
I'm out on the main line, BNSF Railway
Haulin' from the taconite mine
Went out on the line with a pocket full of nothin'
Just grateful that I'm still alive
Rode out to the hump yard, Minneapolis Minnesota
Wondering if you're still in town
I could have been sipping coffee in your kitchen
If I'd had listened to the words that you said.
Feel free not to bother with the words of your father
But you better pay attention to mine
Quit runnin' all night with the dark and the devil
And a head full of whiskey and wine

At Your Window

Honey I'm at your window
Give me a place to hide
Tell me 'bout all your battles
I will take your side
Wake me up in the morning
Coffee and boats of light
Kids running through the kitchen
We could make a life.
Supper is on the table
Biscuits and bowls of stew
Belly's are filled with plenty
And our hearts are too
Evenin' is at our window
Stars drifting in the yard
Sittin' down by the fire
We will take our time

Rose Althea

I went to work at Redstone Mansion
There was a woman washing floors
Said her name was Rose Althea
In her eyes I saw the storm
I fell in love with Rose Althea
Every night she came to me
She sat and read a book of stories
From The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon
Well you know there ain't no glory
In the breaking of your word
But I was tangles with another
It was the coming of the storm
Rose Althea found us lying
In each other's warm embrace
She walked into the empty evening
A blankness spread across her face
There was a blankness on her face.
On the 4th floor on the landing
Found her body hanging there
Yes her name was Rose Althea
And I am the one to blame
Yes I am the one to blame
In the end I took to drifting
'til I drank myself to death
Thinking of my Rose Althea
I shall not sleep quietly in my grave
I still work at Redstone Mansion
I have been known to walk the floors
And I weep for Rose Althea
I'm the thin man in the coal-black coat
Yes I'm the thin man in the coal-black coat

Lost

Times I almost win
then it drags me down again.
No I can't be free
its got me hanging from a string
I'll be lost for as long as it takes
No I can't walk straight
I'm as slanted as the rain
Swear I saw the light
It was hanging by a string
I'll be lost for as long as it takes
